Semen collection and mastery of the technical procedure

Collection represents the starting point of each reproductive cycle. At La Giguellerie, we implement a rigorous protocol to transform the stallion's natural excitement into high-quality biological material suitable for insemination. The objective is to secure each step so that the ejaculate retains all its fertilizing potential.

Equipment preparation and ejaculate collection

It all starts with the meticulous preparation of the artificial vagina. This device must simulate the physiological conditions essential for triggering ejaculation. We adjust two critical parameters: a precise temperature, generally between 45 and 50°C according to the stallion's preferences, and a barometric pressure regulated via a double water wall. A latex liner, lubricated with a sterile non-spermicidal gel, ensures the hygienic collection of the semen.

The stallion is presented to a "teaser" mare to induce optimal sperm excitement. Once the stallion leans on the phantom, the penis is carefully diverted to the artificial vagina. Upon collection, the sample is immediately protected against any thermal shock or exposure to ultraviolet rays. These external elements are factors of instantaneous degradation of the spermatozoa, capable of altering motility in just a few seconds.

As soon as the sample is obtained, the semen is filtered to remove the gel fraction and impurities, then analyzed according to fundamental morphofunctional criteria. We evaluate the concentration by spectrophotometry, as well as progressive motility. This last parameter is crucial: it defines the percentage of spermatozoa capable of moving in a straight and rapid manner to reach the oocyte. We also observe morphology to ensure the integrity of the cellular structures.

For chilled semen, maintained between 4 and 8°C, we add high-tech preservation extenders. These survival media do not merely nourish the cells; they contain antioxidant agents intended to limit lipid peroxidation of the membranes. Without this protection, the fats constituting the wall of the spermatozoa would oxidize, rendering the cell unable to fuse with the egg. Antibiotics complete the formula to control bacterial flora during the storage or transport phase, guaranteeing maximum sanitary safety for the inseminated mare.

An approach based on patience and respect for the animal

The act of collection is not merely a succession of technical gestures; it is above all an interaction with a living being endowed with its own sensitivity. Each stallion has his own learning pace and apprehensions. We attach primordial importance to patience. Rushing a horse, particularly during his first experiences on the phantom, can lead to lasting psychological blocks or negative memories that will complicate his entire career as a stud.

We manage each session with calm, giving the stallion time to understand the codes of artificial breeding. This learning process can sometimes be long and requires fractional attempts over several days. We always prioritize gentleness and respect to establish a climate of mutual trust. This approach allows us to work safely while preserving the mental well-being of the horse. We remain at your entire disposal to discuss your stallion's behavior and adapt our methods to his specific temperament; this dialogue is the foundation of our common success.

Stallion education as the foundation of safety

While we provide all the necessary patience at the center, safety during collection relies on a fragile balance that originates in the early education of the animal with its owner. A respectful and attentive stallion is the only guarantee of a serene procedure for all involved.

The breeder bears a major responsibility in the handling of their young stallion from a very early age. It is illusory to think that a reproduction center can compensate, in a few days, for a lack of discipline accumulated over years. Docility at the time of collection is prepared from weaning through learning respect for human personal space, immobility, and leading in hand without tension. A poorly channeled libido or a horse that has not learned boundaries makes the placement of the teaser mare risky for both personnel and the horse. Investing time in the education of your young stallion at home is the best way to minimize subsequent risks and guarantee quality collections.

Contractual framework and informed consent

Requesting our services implies adherence to our General Terms and Conditions (GTC). In accordance with Article 3, each owner benefits from informed consent. Entrusting your animal to us constitutes recognition of the physical risks inherent in handling stallions and acceptance of the information provided to you.

Our commitment is an obligation of means, as specified in Article 5.1 of our GTC. We mobilize all our know-how, experience, and equipment to act as diligent professionals. However, as it involves unpredictable biological processes, we cannot subscribe to an obligation of result regarding fertility or the success of a gestation. According to Article 5.2, unpredictable reactions related to the individual constitution of the animal or the current limits of veterinary science cannot engage our liability, unless a proven fault is demonstrated.

Sanitary and regulatory requirements of the sector

The marketing of semen is subject to a strict legal framework that protects the entire equine industry against the spread of diseases.

For the national market in Belgium, screening for Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) and Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) is mandatory. For these tests to be valid, a 30-day abstinence period from natural service is strictly required before collections.

For European trade (INTRA), our approval requires us to comply with the European Union protocol. The stallion must stay at the center for 30 consecutive days before collection, without any contact with equidae of lower sanitary status. He must also satisfy additional tests concerning viral arteritis (EVA) and undergo double CEM screening at regular intervals. This rigorous framework is the guarantee of healthy semen that can circulate freely throughout Europe.
